Ways to Stay Slim During SummerSummer Fitness

Many people have been hard at work since January. They’ve been eating right and exercising consistently. It feels like nothing can stop them. Then, summer arrives.

Summer fitness can be tricky. The days are long, the weather is nice and the opportunities to get distracted or just be lazy seem to multiply. What can you do to continue your journey to better fitness when just lying by the pool sounds so tempting? Here are a few common-sense steps you can take.

1. Plan for Vacation

Getting away for a vacation can be valuable for your physical and mental health. However, it doesn’t necessarily fit your summer fitness goals unless you plan ahead. Without a plan, there’s no way that you can stay on track to make your goals.

In the early stages of your vacation planning, think about how you can work fitness into your getaway. Find a hotel that has a spectacular gym, plan a challenging hike or resolve to make lap swimming a daily part of your routine while you’re away from home. It’s not easy to fit in workouts when you’re busy sightseeing and relaxing, but if you make a plan and stick to it, you’re bound to be satisfied by the results.

If some of your vacation workout plans fall through, don’t sweat it. Get back on track the next day, and keep it up once you return home.

2. Don’t Overdo It

There are many risk factors that can increase one’s sensitivity to heat as summer bears in and the long hours of summer days may tempt you to do more and more before your body is ready. If your workout routine is still new, resist the urge to ramp up the intensity, duration or weight too soon. A steady build up makes much more sense, and it’s less likely to leave you with an injury. Stick to your personal get-fit plan, and your body will thank you.

It’s also vital to remember smart hydration practices. Temperatures are soaring, and you’re likely to sweat more in your everyday activities and when you’re exercising. Drink plenty of water before, during and after workouts to ensure that your body stays hydrated. As an additional safety measure, protect yourself from the sun. Heat stroke and sunburns are very real threats to your health and well-being. Avoid outdoor workouts during the worst heat of the day, reserving them for mornings and evenings instead. Don’t forget to layer on the sunscreen to protect your skin whenever you’re outside.

3. Look to the Fall

If you’re afraid that you’ll lose your motivation to work out during the summer, then sign up for an athletic event in the fall. Maybe it will be your first 5K or your third marathon. Why not try out a triathlon or a mud run? The possibilities are endless, and you’ll need to start training now to make certain that you’ll be ready on the day of the event. For even more motivation, ask a couple of friends to sign up with you.

4. No Excuses!

If you make fitness a priority in your life, then you will find time to exercise. Write down your workouts in a planner or enter them into your schedule on your smart phone just like you would a dentist appointment or happy hour with friends. Don’t make any excuses for missing that workout. You’ve got plans, and you’re sticking to them.
